History of the Slot Machine
Charles Fey, was the enterprising American, behind the invention and manufacturing of the slot machines back in 1894. It all started in his workshop in San Francisco, he pioneered numerous and innovative coin operated gaming devices.
It was in the 1930’s that the slot machines were reproduced across America, and then in the late 1940’s a Bugsy Siegel added slot machines to his Flamingo Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas.
Slot machines were initially installed to keep the wives and girlfriends of high rollers, entertained. That is until the mid 80’s when the revenue from the slots began to be on even par with that of the table games. By the time the 1990’s came, the slot machines had taken over and now account for two-thirds of casino’s income in the U.S.
Slot machines obtained their global appeal in casinos for unlike any other game, playing the slots does not require any skill and the player can pace themselves. You may have heard the term ‘One-armed bandit’; this is due to the original designs where you pull the lever at the side of the machine instead of pushing a button to begin the spin.
